Hello colleagues! Greetings from a translator residing in east part of Indonesia, Pasuruan, East Java to be exact. Here, I would like to present the way I am used to translating the text or documents in Ms. Word 2007 using Trados 2007 (It may also be applicable to other Ms . Word versions.). Before we go any further, please note the followings:

Operating System used: Windows 7 Ultimate

Having Trados properly installed.

Now, let's have a look at how Trados works in Ms. Word 2007.

Step 1
Open the file or document you want to translate. Please see the picture below.

And it will be open like this:

Now, please see one marked in red as follows.

Click 'SDL Trados' menu and it will be open like this:

Step 2
Open the 'Translator's Workbench' menu. How? Please see the picture and carefully pay attention on one marked in red.

Click it and the 'SDL Trados Translator's Workbench' is directly open. Please see the picture below.

Step 3
Create or locate the Translation Memory or TM by clicking the 'File' menu in the SDL Trados Translator's Workbench. Please see the picture below.

Then click 'New' and the following picture will be displayed.

After that, determine the source and target languages and click 'Create'. Please see the picture below and pay attention on the numbers in red.

And you will be prompted to locate the TM (Translation Memory) you are creating. Please see the picture below.

Name your TM and save it. Please see the picture below.

And the result will be like the picture below.

Look at the one marked in red. It is the name you typed in the 'create' process you just did.

Step 3
Start translating by putting the cursor on the first words/phrases/sentences. Please see the picture below.

After that, click 'Open/Get' and wait for the box to appear and as soon as the box appears, type your translation in the box provided. Please see the picture below.

When you are done, click 'Set/Close Open/Get' and type your translation again. These steps should be done many times until you come to the end of the translation process and click 'Set/Close' to close and save your works. Please see the picture below.

You've got the Trados in your hand now. :)

Save your time while translating!

In our daily life when we are translating the text, we, of course, need to get things done fast and even faster. It is due to the fact that we have our own deadlines that are either loose or tight. No matter what, the deadlines always matter and need to be met as our clients have stipulated. If we fail to meet the deadlines, let us expect for 'misery'. Our clients will not get in touch with us no matter how well our translations are. Deadline! Deadline! Deadline! Just keep it in mind!

I once remembered one of our fellows failed to meet the deadline. It happened several days ago and I was wondering how this could happen to him. I then asked the outsourcer (he is also our fellow) why this could happen and when the translation had to be delivered. What a mess! The outsourcer told me that he had missed 3 days since the deadline was stipulated. As a language professional, it is a shame! We cannot go with this situation. That is why the corresponding strategies are needed to cope with this. But how?

The key is 'do it right away and do whatever can save your time while translating no matter how trivial it is'. Every second counts and we must remember that. Every possible thing that can save our time while translating should be taken. Let us say, maximizing our PC features. Merely using our PC's mouse is a mistake at all! This should be lessened. Use the 'keyboard shortcuts'! How?

Have a look at some shortcuts (key combinations) below and practice them often. I guarantee it can save your time and none of it is wasted.

Bulan atau Bulan? [Month or Moon?]

The word 'bulan' in Indonesian may be equivalent to either 'month' or 'moon'. This, of course, depends on the context in which the word 'bulan' comes up. Let's say, 'Bulan depan saya akan memberi kuliah di Universitas Dr. Soetomo.' and 'Malam ini bulan tampak sangat indah.'. The sentences will respectively mean 'I will lecture at Dr. Soetomo University next month.' and 'The moon looks so beautiful tonight.'. The word 'bulan' in the first sentence (Bulan depan...) refers to one of the twelve divisions of the calendar year while in the second (Malam ini...) refers to the natural satellite of the Earth. You now know how to appropriately use the word 'bulan [month]' and the word 'bulan [moon]' in case you come across them.

Let me then list the twelve divisions of the calendar year as follows for your reference:

Akte Kelahiran [Birth Certificate]

Birth Certificate or Akte Kelahiran mostly has the same format and contents. However, it is not that simple. The problem is on how to transfer them into the most appropriate target language. This, of course, needs very special attention. To get the most legible birth certificate translation into your language, we will do the followings:

1. review your birth certificate (after being sent to us)
2. translate it into your language (after everything is agreed)
3. edit and review it offline (It is one-way job. We edit and review it)
4. send it to you
5. edit and review it online (it is the last process we call 'two-way communication' including us as a service provider and you as a customer. The media for online communication will include Skype, Y!M, and GTalk. Other media will also be available upon request. Why should this be done? We do realize that our culture and yours are quite different. To minimize the cultural gap or even to do away with it at all, this MUST be done! However, everything depends on you. Today's and Yesterday's Translators

"We actually know it is right, but we are restricted by an old rule."

Whether or not we realize it, technology has changed human civilization in such dramatical way. People can now reach a country within hours while it took days, months, or even years before the technology was invented. That is one of the examples how technology has helped human to get everything done faster than it used to be. This, of course, is one of the advantages the technology has made instead of its disadvantages. I think everything is between "black and white".

As a freelancer spending hours or even days translating, writing, and even blogging, technology will be kind of very useful tool to get everything done faster. This is, at least, what I have in mind. I do not say that to get everything done faster always requires technology. Still, we, human, play very important role in it. We can be its user or its creator. The best part of it is that we can benefit from it, whether or not it has been in accordance with the standard the technology has.

People used to do everything manually before the technology was invented. Say, when people wanted to write, they had to use papers, pencils, pens or somewhat modern tool such as typewriter which required high concentration and care in using it. They might be the answers to every problem at that time, but I do not think that they are the answers to every problem we are currently having.

The paradigm saying that anything occurring yesterday is the same to one occurring today or even MUST be the same to one occurring today should be forgotten or even thrown away! This will create the chains to our creative mind. What today has become is surely different from what yesterday had become. People could do ONLY one thing, but people can do two or even more things at the same time. It is due to what technology has offered. Thanks to technology everything can be smoothly done!

I do not try to push my mind to you, but I think that it is the fact that we are supposed to rethink. Most of the yesterday's translators specialized in limited areas of expertise due to some logical reasons at that time. They did not find anything in instant and easy way. They had to "step on the millions of stairs" to reach a place. On the contrary, today's translators can find everything in instant and easy way. They do not have to "step on the millions of stairs". They just "press the button" and can reach a place without being exhausted. My question is "Do we today's translators still have to limit our areas of expertise on some fields that we actually can reach more due to technology?".

They yesterday's translators did a thing in thousands of taps while we today's translators do it in a click!

Standard Language [Bahasa Baku]

Standard language is an accepted language variety for formal situations, such as those in legislation, correspondence, and official meetings. Standard language is mainly used as the language of unity in the language community of many languages. The standard language is generally enforced through dictionary (spelling and vocabulary), grammar, pronunciation, body language, legal status, and the use in community (government, schools, etc.).

Standard language cannot be used for all purposes, but only for official communications, technical discourse, public speaking, and conversation with people who are respected. Apart from the four purposes aforementioned above, the non-standard language is used.

Indonesian [Bahasa Indonesia]

Indonesian or Bahasa Indonesia is the official language of the Republic of Indonesia. The use of Indonesian was officially announced a day after the Independence of Indonesia was declared.

From the linguistic point of view, Indonesian is one of Malay varieties. The basis used is the Riau Malay dating back to 19th century. In its development, it evolved due to its use as a working language within the colonial administration and its various standardization processes since early 20th century. The naming of Indonesian started since Sumpah Pemuda [#equal to Youth Oath] was introduced on October 28, 1928 to avoid the "language imperialism" impression. This process causes the differences between current Indonesian and Malay variants used in Riau and Malay Peninsula. Until now, Indonesian is a living language, which continually generates new words, either through creation or absorption of local and foreign languages.

Although Indonesian is understood and spoken by more than 90% of people in Indonesia, it is not the native language for most of its speakers. Most of the Indonesian citizens use one of 748 languages in Indonesia as a mother tongue. Indonesian speakers often use everyday language (colloquial language) and/or mix it with other Malay or mother tongue dialects. Nevertheless, Indonesian is widely used at universities, mass media, literature, software, official correspondence, and various other public forums which can be concluded that Indonesian is used by all of Indonesian citizens.

Indonesian phonology and grammar are deemed quite easy. It is due to the fact that the important basics for basic communication can be learned within several weeks.

How We Translate the Text

As a true professional in the language-related service business, quality of works in any case is the first-thing-first. Best ways are always applied to generate the best quality of works. Here, we will show you how your documents/files are handled when you get us to translate them.

To make sure that none is mistranslated, we do planning in this case. This process consists of identification and recognition of the scope of the material to be translated (including the use of the terms)

2. Analyzing
After the planning process is done, we do the analysis. The analysis process we apply will consist of the followings:

>choosing the best strategy to generate best quality in translation we are working on
>researching the source and the would-be translation result in terms of type, purpose, targeted audience, function, and the scope of the translations.

3. Translating
In this process, we apply the best strategy we have chosen to transfer the messages from the source to the target well. This, of course, will be carefully done.

4. Revising
After the translating process is done, we do the revision. The process we apply, in this case, will consist of reviewing the translation result and doing the revision on the words or sentences that seem to be wrong or mistranslated.

5. Editing/proofreading
In this process, one of our team members will edit or proofread the work that has been accomplished. It's a free of charge service! However, if you have your own editor or proofreader to do the editing or proofreading on the translation result we sent you, this will be fine. The cost will be your responsibility in this case.

6. Reviewing
This should also be done by others. In this case, one of our team members will do the review on the translation result we have made. This is a free of charge service as well! If you have your own reviewer, that will be fine, but the cost will be your responsibility.

7. Finalizing

8. Delivering the translation result

Behind the Javanese Scripts

There are various versions about the history of the Javanese scripts. Some said that the first founder of the Javanese scripts was Sultan Agung Hanyokrokusumo of Mataram Kingdom in Yogyakarta, but some others said that the Javanese scripts were actually introduced by Aji Saka. There are some versions about the history of Aji Saka. Some said that Aji Saka was actually a moslem scholar from Mecca (his real name was unknown) and others said that Aji Saka was a Javanese knight.

However, most people claimed that Aji Saka was the first man who introduced the Javanese scripts. Since then, there existed some popular versions of Javanese scripts’ history. One of the versions tells that the Javanese scripts actually told about the journey of Aji Saka. The Javanese scripts tell about Aji Saka’s two servants' loyalty.

Aji Saka was a wanderer who was known as the conqueror of a very greedy king; Prabu Dewata Cengkar. Aji Saka was always accompanied by his two loyal servants in his journey. When Aji Saka arrived at a place, he left his heirloom weapon and ordered one of his servants to keep this heirloom weapon (some said that Aji Saka wandered and his heirloom weapon was left behind in the palace to be kept by one of his servants). Aji Saka ordered his servant to well keep the weapon and not to hand it over to ones other than Aji Saka.

Aji Saka then continued his journey with the second servant till at a place Aji Saka had his second servant take the heirloom weapon he left. The second servant went to take the heirloom weapon, but the first servant did not want to hand it over to the second servant because he [the first servant] firmly held what Aji Saka had ordered him to do. On the other side, the second servant insisted on carrying out his duty from Aji Saka to take the weapon. Because both servants tried hard to carry out their respective duties, there happened the equal, intensive fight which led them both to death.

Accordingly, the story was enshrined in the Javanese scripts as follows:
* Ha na ca ra ka –> Hana caraka = There were servants
* Da ta saw a la –> Data sawala = fighting each other
* Pa dha ja ya nya –> Padha jayanya = equally strong
* Ma ga ba tha nga –> Maga bathanga = both dead

In a sentence, the scripts will read as follows:
There were servants. They were fighting each other. They were equally strong. They both finally died.

Javanese Dialects [Dialek Basa Jawa]

Javanese or Basa Jawa is a language mainly used by Javanese ethnic population in some parts of Banten in the districts of Serang and Tangerang, West Java, particularly in the northern coast stretching from the northern coast of Karawang, Subang, Indramayu and Cirebon, Central Java and East Java in Indonesia.

Javanese is basically divided into 2 dialects. They are local and
social dialects. The local dialect is one based on the region, local character, and culture. The differences between one dialect and other dialects can be between 0-70%. Meanwhile, the social dialect is one based on the fact that this language is made up of gradations which are very different from Indonesian or Malay although it is classified as Austronesian as well.

From the local dialect, there exist 3 major groups of Javanese [Basa Jawa]. They are a group of Javanese [Basa Jawa] from Western Regions which is often called Ngapak-ngapak Javanese, a group of Javanese [Basa Jawa] from Central Regions which is often called Standard Javanese, and a group of Javanese [Basa Jawa] from Eastern Regions which is often called Eastern Javanese

A group of Javanese from Western Regions includes:
- Banten dialect
- Cirebon dialect
- Tegal dialect
- Banyumas dialect
- Bumiayu dialect (the transition of Tegal and Banyumas).

A group of Javanese from Central Regions includes:
- Pekalongan dialect
- Kedu dialect
- Bagelen dialect
- Semarang dialect
- Jepara dialect
- Rembang dialect
- Demak dialect
- Kudus dialect
- Pati dialect
- Blora dialect
- Surakarta dialect
- Yogyakarta dialect
- Madiun dialect

While a group of Javanese from Eastern Regions includes:
- East Java North Coast dialect (Tuban, Bojonegoro, Lamongan)
- Surabaya dialect
- Malang dialect
- Jombang dialect
- Tengger dialect
- Banyuwangi dialect (or Osing language)

Social dialect in Javanese has the form as follows:
- Ngoko
- Ngoko Andhap
- Madhya
- Madhyantara
- Kromo [Krama]
- Kromo [Krama] Inggil.

Everyone in Java has his own dialect, and so do I.
